Pentair Superflo vs Intelliflo Variable Speed Pool Pumps

What's the Difference

Do you have an inground swimming pool that needs a single speed pool pump? If so, then you should take a look at the Pentair SuperFlo. It is designed to quietly and efficiently circulate the water of a permanent inground swimming pool. If you currently use the Hayward Super Pump, you can replace it with the Pentair SuperFlo. The crossover compatibility is the same.

The Pentair SuperFlo includes a single-speed motor, available in either 230-Volt or 115-Volt models. It is a self-priming swimming pool pump, which means it removes air bubbles after you activate it. The cleaning intervals last a lot longer because of the large strainer basket included with the pump. The basket can collect and store larger amounts of debris, so you can keep the pump on longer before having to clear out the basket. The transparent lid on the strainer basket makes it easy to monitor how much debris has been collected.

There are several different Pentair SuperFlo pool pump models available. They have anywhere from 0.5 horsepower to 2.5 horsepower. Each model has received its UL, CUL, and NSF certifications. The manufacturer offers a 1-year limited warranty to each consumer. The only stipulation is that you must use a qualified installer to install the pump on your swimming pool.

Pool Pump Usage Tips

The Pentair SuperFlo pool pump is for inground swimming pools only. It is not meant to be used with an above-ground or inflatable swimming pool.

Before connecting the pump to the power circuit, make sure a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) exists to safeguard the circuit. Ask a licensed electrician and plumber to assist you with the installation because they will ensure it is done properly and safely.

The pump motor heats up quickly, so there must be plenty of air ventilation available to release the heat and prevent overheating. Do not allow sunlight, dirt, or moisture to gain access to the motor.

The Pump Priming Process

Here are the basic steps for priming the pump:

  1. Take off the lid and clamp from the pump.
  2. Add water to the strainer pot until it is filled.
  3. Put the clamp and lid back on the pump.
  4. Activate the switch and watch the air release valve closely.
  5. Close the valve if water leaks from the valve.

The air bubbles should all be gone now! Always make sure to prime the pump with water before activating it. Otherwise, a dry pump could cause damage to the impeller, seal, or pump casing.

Freeze Protection

Freezing weather conditions could potentially damage your pool pump. If your local weather report indicates that freezing temperatures will hit your area, you need to winterize your pump immediately. The limited warranty included with your pump does not reimburse you for freeze-related damages.

Temporary freezing conditions are no big deal, though. If the weather report shows only one night of freezing temperatures will come, you could keep the pool pump activated throughout the night to prevent damage. But when the freezing temperatures last longer than one day, you need to take the necessary precautions to winterize your pump.

Here are the winterization steps:

  1. Shut down the electrical power connection to the pump.
  2. Take out the two drain plugs from the housing area.
  3. Drain the water from the pump entirely.
  4. Place a weather-resistant cover over the motor.
  5. Wait for the freezing temperatures to go away.
  6. Remove the cover and reinstall the electrical power connection.
  7. Activate the pump

If your Pentair SuperFlo pool pump has a motor with under two horsepower, it can handle 230 volts or 115 volts. But if the motor is over two horsepower, then it must use 230 volts. A licensed electrician can wire the connection correctly. It is the only way not to void the warranty.

Alternative Pool Pumps

Let’s compare some of the alternative pool pumps to the Pentair SuperFlo.

Pentair WhisperFlo

The Pentair WhisperFlo is similar to the Pentair SuperFlo. The two main differences are the Pentair WhisperFlo has a bigger strainer basket and makes less noise. Unfortunately, you’ll have to pay $100 more to enjoy these conveniences. It is not worth the extra money if you’re on a budget. You mine as well choose the Pentair SuperFlo for $100 less.

Hayward Super Pump

The Hayward Super Pump is the biggest competitor of the Pentair SuperFlo. They both have similar features and cost about the same too. However, the Hayward Super Pump has a somewhat bigger strainer basket. The locking design on the lid is a little different too. Other than that, both are pretty much the same.

Final Words

Don’t stress yourself over the installation of the pool pump. It is wise to hire a licensed electrician and plumber to perform the installation because they are trained to handle these complex and challenging tasks. Besides, you’re required to hire professional installers if you want to keep your 1-year limited warranty activated. You’ll have to send proof of the professional installation to Pentair. If they don’t receive the proof within 60 days of your purchase, you could lose your warranty.

The Pentair SuperFlo consumes quite a bit of electricity because it uses a single-speed motor. But the upside to a single-speed motor is it has a longer lifespan than a variable speed motor. It is also cheaper too.
